Redefining Music Discovery Through an Audio-First Editorial Experience
Problem
Music discovery had become fast, disposable, and trend-driven. At a time when: • Artists go viral, then disappear • Algorithms prioritize engagement over depth • Music blogs were losing relevance • Podcasts lacked depth or structure • Discovery felt more like consumption than connection The challenge: How do we redesign music discovery to prioritize depth, education, and long-term connection with artists?
Core Insight
People don't just want new music. They want context, story, and a reason to care. Discovery should feel like learning and connection—not scrolling and skipping.
Strategic Direction
Replace passive listening with guided discovery • Combine editorial storytelling + music curation • Build a system where listeners can grow with artists over time

Inspire by Sound audio blog format
Inventing the "Audio Blog" Format
Instead of interviews, DJ mixes, or playlist dumps, we created a structured audio experience that mirrors a written blog. Each episode: • Focused on one artist or theme • Blended narration, music, and storytelling • Explained the artist's origin, influences, and evolution Why it worked: Added depth without losing accessibility. Made discovery intentional, not random.
Designing a Taste System (Artist Curation)
We implemented strict filters: • Artists under 200K monthly listeners • Strong artistic intent (not casual releases) • Visible growth or evolution in their work We also rejected artists who didn't align creatively and prioritized potential and message over popularity. This turned curation into a point of view—not a playlist.
Defining What We Refused to Do
Strong creative direction came from clear rejection: • No mainstream artists (unless contextually meaningful) • No pay-to-play placements (protecting platform integrity) • No trend-chasing content • No surface-level conversations Tradeoffs: Slower growth, less monetization, smaller initial reach. But stronger trust, identity, and differentiation.
Balancing Education vs Engagement
Challenge: Avoid sounding like a lecture while keeping conversations natural and engaging. Solution: • Lean into organic chemistry between hosts • Use unscripted conversation flow • Introduce humor, sarcasm, and personality The result felt like friends guiding you through music—not teaching you.
Expanding the Experience Beyond Audio
Each episode extended into: • Curated playlists (Spotify, Apple Music) • Guest collaborations (DJs, artists) • Cross-genre exploration weekly Genres included: Funk, house, soul, indie rock, Brazilian funk, Latin, pop This created repeat engagement, broader audience reach, and continuous discovery loops.
The Solution
A hybrid platform combining: • Podcast (audio blog storytelling) • Playlists (instant access to music) • Community collaboration (guest voices) Each episode delivered education, discovery, and emotional connection.
Constraints & Limitations
• Scheduling conflicts post-COVID • No monetization despite demand • Limited scalability due to manual production • Time constraints balancing full-time work
Key Takeaways
• Curation is a creative act, not a feature • Format design can redefine an entire category • What you reject defines your identity • Authenticity compounds faster than trends • Community is built through trust, not reach
